Playing the game of life can be one heck of an adrenaline rush. There are good times that you hold onto and cherish forever, reminiscing with a smile or laugh here and there. Moments that you want to make last forever, and more waiting to be created. The game of life can also, however, be cruel and unbearable‌. It is these trying and harrowing pitfalls that can lead to depression.

In adults, depression is more recognizable compared to the signs displayed by children. Following are a few of the most noticeable symptoms of depression in adults;

  • Drastic change and negative behaviors or speech

  • Picking fights with others

  • Low moods and withdrawing from friends and family

  • Alcohol and drug abuse

  • Issues with focusing

  • Changes in eating and sleeping habits

  • Sudden separation or divorce from romantic partner

  • Lack of interest in activities

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Battling negative emotions (e.g. helplessness and restlessness)

If you or someone you know are experiencing any of the above do not be afraid to seek medical help for a diagnosis. The sooner you seek help, the greater the chances of catching the mental illness in its early stages. If you are not ready to see a doctor, at least utilize the resources and support systems that aim to help you process your situation.

Any steps you take are instrumental to your recovery journey. Each one is just as important as the other and should be celebrated‌. Just remember that this is your game of life and you can play by your own rules.
